This is a common question running through the minds of those in the diaspora.
How can someone understand a language but not be able to speak Tamil?
Well as someone in the Tamil diaspora, you may sit in this in-between place when it comes to Tamil.
A place where you may have picked up a few words, can follow conversations or even understand what’s being said
But when its your turn to respond
You freeze, panic and switch to English
Now this is a really frustrating place to be.
Especially when you want to respond but just don’t know how.
And the most efficient way to close this gap isn’t actually
watching more Tamil movies, listening to convos or even studying formal Tamil.
Because the grammar rules of formal Tamil change in daily speech.
And listening to others speak is great but not helpful if you’re never actually responding.
So what’s missing?
A strong base in everyday spoken Tamil, built through practise in a guided learning space that focuses on
learning spoken Tamil grammar
practising sounds and proper pronunciation
building sentences step-by-step
responding to real-life situations
So you can go from “I understand some Tamil” to “I can actually take part in conversations”
That’s exactly what we do in the Spoken Tamil Essentials course.
A 5-level program designed under the guidance of global Tamil educators to specifically help you speak Tamil confidently.
With each 10-week level building on the next, this step by step program will take your from the spoken Tamil basics to real conversations.
You’ll join at the level that matches your current ability either Level 1 or Level 2, and work your way to being a natural speaker.
By the end of Level 1 (Foundations) you will be able to describe everyday things confidently and understand how spoken Tamil grammar functions.
By the end of Level 2 (Sentence Flow) you will use basic present and past verb conjugations and everyday grammar to start speaking about your daily life with others.
By the end of Level 3 (Conversation Builder) you will use basic verb conjugations for all three tenses (past, present and future), it's negations as well as the core grammar to naturally start applying Tamil to your life. Here is where you go from understanding to speaking with intention and confidence.
Each 10-week level includes:
✅ Live Classes
✅ Small groups for practise
✅ 1:1 support
✅ Lesson recordings
✅ Homework with audio in your dialect (Eelam or Indian Tamil)
So whether your goal is to:
Speak with your family and friends
Prepare for a trip
Or pass on Tamil to your kids
This course is designed to give you the tools to get there.
