Learning Tamil Saved My Marriage
Marriage is not an easy thing.
Dating may be between two people, but marriage, in Tamil eyes, is a family affair, where two people and their families become interconnected.
Even if both people getting married are Tamil, traditions and upbringings can be completely different from one Tamil family to another.
I’m sure you’ve noticed it amongst family friends or even cousins.
So imagine marrying into a Tamil family when you didn't grow up Tamil at all.
No amount of reading or talking to others can fully prepare you for the realities of navigating your specific partner’s family until you’re in the middle of it.
My student Natalie* has been married to her Tamil husband for three years.
Though Natalie felt welcomed and accepted by her husband’s Tamil family, she told me that for years she still struggled to understand certain family dynamics and traditions.
People were kind and would explain things to her, but without the deeper cultural context, she often still felt confused and alone.
After their son was born, those differences became much harder to navigate and even started creating challenges within her marriage.
Her husband was also in an awkward position, trying to understand what she was experiencing while navigating his own family.
But as soon as Natalie started learning Tamil, something began to change.
She wasn't just learning words and sentences. Through learning the language and the cultural context behind why certain things are said and done, she began to understand her husband’s family in a way she hadn't been able to before.
She told me:
“Learning Tamil with you has helped me understand his family and look at Tamil culture differently. I love how you go the extra mile to share cultural explanations with us. I cannot thank you enough.”
Then she said something that made me rethink what language learning can do for people:
“Honestly... learning Tamil saved my marriage.”
This is what it’s all about.
Context, Understanding, Belonging, and Family.
Language can tell us so much about how a group of people think, communicate, and understand the world around them.
So, learning that language with the proper context can completely change how we understand and connect with one another.
It's simply something you can not get from just memorizing a few phrases.
